Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hello! My name is Leila Navabi. I’m a 5ft 1inch Welsh, Brown queer person who writes and performs musical comedy for the entertainment of mostly people who identify in any of those ways also.
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?
I did GCSE music and the syllabus was split into three parts – theory, performance and composition. I was always best at the composition part, and I think of myself as a bit of a composition – lots of things mixed together to make one thing. The show features eight original compositions (songs) written and performed by me. I also, like most performers of the comedy proclivity, write lots of my early seeds of material in a composition notebook.
Tell us all about your show!
I’d say it’s the debut hour, and an audacious punk musical-comedy show, of a Welsh, Gay, Gen-Z, Brown imp all about the dubious ethics of artistically exploiting marginalised identities for social gain.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’m excited to see Pravanya Pillay in the ‘Best of So You Think You’re Funny’ showcase because she is going to be a superstar super soon and I get to say ‘I KNEW ABOUT HER BEFORE YOU ALL DID’! Priya Hall: Grandmother’s Daughter is also going to be excellent. I saw a preview and I’m obsessed. Also, like literally everyone and their mum, Lorna Rose-Treen. Her act is special.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
NOPE! I have signed up for a fancy gym membership in Edinburgh for August though and I’m hoping that it will be a safe space for me from flyers and stale old men devoid of friends (also more commonly known as ‘comedy reviewers’).
Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?
I don’t do it anymore because I think I liked it more than anyone else but it was ‘I have an unconscious bias – I am firmly biased towards being unconscious’. What a waste!
What have been some of the most unique and different comedy shows you have seen this year and why?
The comedy night ‘Party’ which is based out of Bristol (but I think expanding) is the most unique and fun and refreshing night I’ve been to ever in my 24 years of quite isolated life. I hate leaving Wales for anything because it’s the best place on earth but I will cross the Severn Bridge to go see ‘Party’ any day.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Gosh, I don’t know yet. I know each day will involve seeing a least one enemy because it’s a small space for everyone in the arts to congregate by hopefully that keeps you on your toes. I think I’ll go for a swim. I’ve also become one of those ‘go in the sea for a minute to feel better’ people which I won’t feel guilty about because it has been MEDICALLY recommended to me. Go see some shows, do my show, eat a kebab, sleep, repeat?
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
I imagine it’s only leaving your digs for your show and returning immediately after but I don’t see myself doing that. Also potato scones are the crown jewels of Scotland and I intend to consume as many of them as physically possible throughout the month.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Not having the FOMO I’ve had every other year!
The most challenging thing about performing at the fringe?
I mean, not to make it too bleak, but probably… racism? It’s already rearing its ugly head like a toiletless turd so I’m sure we’ll have a lovely river of it to sink in throughout August.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Again, I don’t know! I’m new to this! Sun cream! Skin cancer is REAL!
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
I haven’t got a clue.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
My cat. I am devastated that he’ll never know the joy of life performance.
