Hello! Tell us about yourself?

My name is Celya AB, I’m a Q&A enthusiast first and comedian second.

How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?

I originally was going to call it Celya AB Has A Bit Of Fun (Is That Such A Crime?) but I found a second rodeo joke in an old notebook, so I tweeted it and some people liked it and for likes I am nothing but a crooked cop.

Tell us all about your show!

This show is about always wanting to be an adult as a kid, and now I’m here I don’t know how to feel about it. It’s trying to look back at my childhood and realising it’s all fragmented. I’ve been watching a lot of Pierre Desprogues and really love how much of his stuff was made up and odd. I kind of leaned in on that side of me, it’s very silly.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

So many it would be cruel to your word count but I’m particularly excited about Dan Tiernan’s debut as he makes me laugh a lot.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

I’ve been coming up to the fringe on and off since 2018, but last year was my first full run. Very boring advice but I try to swim/exercise as much as possible and I don’t drink until the third week.

Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?

“Here’s how I understood the class system here, once I saw a fight in Aldi, but then I went to M&S and I saw a duel”. Don’t know if it’s my favourite but I like saying it. I think people get tense in the first half like I’m about to be really classist but then it’s just a silly cartoon.

What have been some of the most unique and different comedy shows you have seen this year and why?

Mike Wozniak’s show Suza is wonderful and showed me things I didn’t know you could do with comedy. The Delightful Sausage: Nowt But Sea also made me laugh a lot. Rob Auton too.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

5am: full triathlon
7am: power nap
7:20am-10am: watch Heat (1995)
10-12: stand next to people’s posters spreading awful rumours about them (“nice poster…. for someone who said the NHS is overfunded”)
12-1pm: meditate
1-2pm: Noodles & Dumplings
2pm: climb half of Arthur’s Seat, remember I’m scared of heights, walk down with a smugness implying I made it to the top
2:30pm: watch video essays about Heat (1995)
5:30-7:20pm: eat one apple
7:30pm: show
9:00pm: read Al Pacino’s wikipedia page in bed

What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was that you can only hope to enjoy it 50% of the time and it’s okay to find it stressful and hard and fun and brilliant all at the same time.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

It makes you so much better at comedy! There’s a brilliant bit around week 2 where everyone is so so funny in conversations.

The most challenging thing about performing at the fringe?

The cost. 100%.

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

Three copies of Heat (1995).

What’s the secret to successful flyering?

I don’t know. I am very bad at it as I get flashbacks to being a commission only street fundraiser for a company that turned out to be a con

Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?

I love the audiences at Machynlleth Comedy Festival so maybe a mash of all of them, or a nice dog.

If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?

I’m @abcelya on all socials.

And finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

Doctors HATE her!
