Ones To Watch – INTERVIEW – A Permanent Shadow

A new year means there are lots of new and exciting shows, music, albums, comedy and much around the corner and we have an exciting month for you! In true Phoenix Remix tradition we are chatting to lots of different acts all about what they have in store for 2022. Today we talk to singer CP about the new music and upcoming shows the band Permanent Shadow have in store for the year.

Hello tell us all about yourself?

My name is CP (short for Christian Peter) and I am the singer in A Permanent Shadow. I’m of Austrian origin but have lived in Barcelona for most of my life. I love cats and the Mediterranean Sea. There’s nothing like the sea breeze to lift your spirits up. I hate stupidity and arrogance.

How did you get into music?

When I was a boy my sister brought home the album Let’s Dance by David Bowie. I was immediately smitten by it. I knew from then on that I wanted to be involved in music. I learned to play drums in my teens and was a drummer for various bands until 2016, when I decided I’d rather helm my own project as a singer. Now I drum only occasionally on my own records.

What have been your favourite songs you have released?

I really like our new single “Beautiful People” a lot. It’s very well written, and I can say so myself because I didn’t write it. The song was composed by a friend of mine. It’s very catchy and the lyrics are really witty, and I think we’ve done it justice with our arrangement and performance. Hopefully my friend Paul the composer thinks the same.

What are your plans for 2022?

In January and February we’ll have two more singles out, and then in March the album “Humdrum”. We’ll see how that goes and if we can afford to play some live shows, which I’d love to. Other than that, we’ll record a covers EP and probably towards the end of 2022, our third album.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing perform online or in person to this year?

I will see The Godfathers next week, which I really look forward to. They are a great live band and always deliver. I will also try to catch Bauhaus on their tour next year, as well as Simple Minds and The Cult. I’ve seen all of the above-mentioned bands many times and they always put on a great show.

What styles do you hope to see more of in music this year?

I think there are some amazing new releases by older bands and luckily they are getting a lot of recognition. The new Duran Duran album is awesome, and I really like the new Manics record, as well as Modest Mouse’s new album and the collaboration album between Mark Lanegan and Joey from Icarus Line. I’m a sucker for sophisticated classic Pop-Rock, and fortunately there’s lots of it out there at the moment.

What musician is your one to watch in 2022 and why?

I am a huge fan of The Anchoress from Wales. She’s been around the block a few times but it’s only now I have the feeling her music is reaching a broader audience, thanks to her collaborations with Simple Minds and Manic Street Preachers. She deserves a lot more attention.

Do you have any new years resolutions? If so what are they?

Moan a bit less and think positive. I have this friend and she’s really into mindfulness and positive thinking and she’s taught me a few tricks. If you pause for a few moments every day to visualize the future you desire it slowly starts falling into place. So I’ll be doing more of that in 2022.

Are you on social media? If so how can people find out more about you?

We are on Facebook, Instagram and Youtube. Our website www.apermanentshadow.com is a good starting point where you’ll find all the relevant links if you want to learn more about A Permanent Shadow.

Three words why people should come and see you this year?

 We love you.

Quick Fire Round

The movie or television show you are looking forward to seeing this year?

The Sinner Season 4. Bill Pullman is one of the most underrated actors around.

Your favourite book?

Mark Lanegan’s Sing Backwards and Weep. I recommend the audiobook told by Lanegan himself.

If you could paint anything what would you paint?

A portrait of my mother in her wedding dress. She looked absolutely gorgeous and is such a strong and brave woman. I’d hang it above my bed as a reminder of her limitless optimism and willpower. I’m a lousy painter though.

What is the most delightful word you can think of?

Arroz negro (black rice in Spanish, my favourite dish).

Favourite album?

Station to Station by David Bowie. It’s the perfect album in my opinion.

Where would you love to go on holiday this year?

I’d love to explore the Canadian West Coast, Vancouver in particular. I’ve wanted to make this trip for years, let’s hope I’ll pull it off in 2022.

What is your favourite quote from a television show?

“What a f-ing rotter”. Steve Jones on the Bill Grundy show in 1976. Priceless. Jonesy is a legend and his radio show is excellent. Needless to say, he’s an amazing guitar player as well.

Who is your favourite film character and why?

I must say I’m a huge fan of the actor Edward Burns, especially his romcom stuff. He’s really funny with an Irish sense of humour and very Long Island at the same time, which I find very engaging. My favourite character of his is Mickey Fitzpatrick in “She’s The One” with Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Aniston from 1996, way before their fame blew up stratospherically.
