The Travel Book – TRAVEL STORIES – The Low Flying Planes of Sint Maarten

In 2021, we want to give you some special editions of the Travel Book throughout the year. Whilst there is still so many places to write about, I think it is also really fun to write about actual experiences that I have had whilst travelling. There have been so many interesting stories so I thought what better way to celebrate them then by telling you all about them.

The Low Flying Planes of Sint Maarten

In 2013 I went on a cruise to the Caribbean and one of the islands that we visited was Sint Maarten. One of the excursions we planned to do whilst we were there was a rib boat tour of the island which lead us to seeing something was extraordinary and if you are ever there I highly recommend going to see as there is nothing else like it.

On the Dutch side of the island there is a beach called Maho that is right in front of the runway for Princess Juliana International Airport – it is so close to it that there are actually signs on the beach warning people to be careful of landing planes. Our rib boat stopped about 300 yards off the coast of the beach to witness the bizarre spectacular and it was so insane – here is the video that I took at the time.

Now as you can see we are pretty far away from the beach but the planes came pretty close so you can imagine how close they actually get on the beach. It was so weird to be that close to a plane and watching it land, whilst the video shows smaller planes we also had a international plane fly over us and that was insane and felt so big so I can only imagine what it is like on the actual beach.

It may of been a really small part of my holiday but it is one of those experiences that you won’t forget in a hurry as it really was simply unique,
