Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of No Doubt. They are such an iconic pop punk band and also the feminine power that Gwen Stefani has is also a reason why they are such a fantastic band with some great music. Their music videos are really interesting and have some really great edit choices which is why I wanted to do a whole 5 weeks of them!
Just A Girl – No Doubt
Why did you choose this particular video?
This is a really interesting song and it has a really great video to go along with it. The music video uses the edit and the cinematography to celebrate women and there are some fun edit choices to do this.
So, what is the narrative?
The song and music video is focussed on living in a mans world, this is demonstrated in the video with all the shots with women in being brightly coloured and fun and the shot with men being dull colours that by the end they break into the women’s world.
Favourite parts of the video

The edit is fantastic in this video and it is something that I adore – it has parts of the video where it edits to the beat of the track. It creates the pace, the punk feel of the song and a sense of rebellion which works so well.

The colour grade is really interesting in this video. All shots with just males in them are very dull in colours where as all shots with females are bold, bright, punchy and sort of ‘unrealistic’. It creates a really fascinating metaphor which is portrayed with the men entering the room at the end.

Some of the camera shots are amazing in this video. The pan shots merge the two worlds together of the dull and the bright. A lot of the shots are high and low and it really makes a difference in the video as it makes it incredibly interesting.
