Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of No Doubt. They are such an iconic pop punk band and also the feminine power that Gwen Stefani has is also a reason why they are such a fantastic band with some great music. Their music videos are really interesting and have some really great edit choices which is why I wanted to do a whole 5 weeks of them!

Ex-Girlfriend – No Doubt

Why did you choose this particular video?

I think this was one of the earliest No Doubt songs i was introduced to. It used to be part of a Playstation 1 demo game that was sort of like a very early Guitar Hero sort of game called Frequency and I used to play it a lot.

So, what is the narrative?

It is all based around the lyrics of the song and the video is a sort of mini film where Gwen Stefani’s character wants to take revenge on her ex-boyfriend.

Favourite parts of the video

The colour pink is really predominant in this video. It really creates a strong and bold statement throughout. It means that even when the colour grade changes it is still really dominant and bold and stands out on its own. It is hinted in parts of the grade, on areas such as the walls and through the makeup.

The colour grade is so interesting in this video as it jumps from bold colours to black and white to a faded look. The thing that makes it look a bit uneasy and reels you into the narrative is the soft light around the edge of some of the shots.

The editing relies on quick, basic edits as it is helping to tell the narrative whilst also keeping the pace of the video. The editing may come across as simplistic but in this case it works really well.
