Here at The Phoenix Remix, we have been sent some previews of shows heading to the Edinburgh Fringe. So over the next few weeks, we will be reviewing these so that you can keep an eye on them or potentially go and see them at the festival. Stuart Goldsmith’s show runs between the 17th and the 30th at this years festival.
When you go into some stand up shows it can take a while for the comedian to get a feel for the audience and for the laughs to come. Not with Stuart Goldsmith, the energy is high right from the start and the laughs start instantly.
Known as the ‘Climate Comedian’ it is not surprising that that main core of the show is about Climate Change. Whilst most people will approach this topic as preachy, Stuart Goldsmith does not seem to do this instead he approaches it in a way that makes it comical and also informative in a fun and engaging way. One of the highlights of the show is the joke that compares climate change to Disney and it is a fun comparison and once you hear it you won’t be able to ‘unsee’ it.
There is a section of the show that does require audience participation but it is emphasised that it is a safe space and those who want to get involved can and it is their choice if they want to no-one is forced. Those who do participate have really fun stories to tell that keeps the energy alive in the set.
The show is called Canary and there is a fun and also very informative section in the middle that focusses on this topic and when you have heard the section it makes sense why the show is called this and how well it all interlinks with the show.
Whilst a lot of Climate Change shows are aimed at a specific audience, I would say that this show can appeal to all because whilst it is making important points, it isn’t preachy and at times takes the mickey out of it in a way that is fun to some audience members whilst also not offending those who are really strongly into Climate Change. A show I would recommend watching at this years Fringe.
