The great thing about the Edinburgh Fringe is that you will stumble across unique comedy shows that would not be possible at any other location. I think in some ways this is one of those shows.
A new concept this year by Stephen Gordon this show puts comedians untested jokes into the limelight. Comedians tend to use Note apps to write ideas or the formations of jokes that could potentially be used and then put aside. This show puts these draft ideas into the limelight. Each night four different comedians come to the show and put their ideas that never made it to their normal shows into the limelight and in the hands of the audience.
It is a really interesting concept as you get to see the way that a comedians mind works. The way to look at this show is that you go into it and expect the unexpected. Some of the jokes will be hilarious others will miss the mark but that is the point of the show. Even when the jokes do not hit, the audience will still laugh as this performance works on two tiers – laughing with the comedian and laughing at the comedian.
From a stand up perspective, this is a very brave show for comedians to be involved with. Whilst their own stand up shows are scripted in a way to show an audience the persona they want to be portrayed as, this is a more vulnerable show as it can show them ‘failing’ at times which is a great, if there is anything that we have learnt from art forms such as improv, failing can create huge humour and admiration from the audience.
This show is on late night at the Fringe and it is the perfect time slot for it as anything can happen and that means there is more freedom for the acts to keep their notes unfiltered.
If you are at the Fringe this year, go and see this show as it is great fun with a lot of laughs. The fact that the line up always rotates, you can always go and visit more then once. If you are a fan of stand up comedy, go and see this show.
