It is festival season and that means that in the next month there is so many great comedy festivals to look forward to! This month we are looking at some of the great shows that you can see at the Edinburgh Fringe. BOYKING is an epic and evil clown show about a little boy named Wilfred who wants, more than anything in the world, to be the king. It’s equal parts horror, musical, and just plain dumb. I wanted to make a show that felt at once relevant to our world today and uses what I learned in the 6 week London Tap Academy course for beginners. Is the world ready for this genre-defying spectacle? Let’s see!
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Lara and Maya Ricote — two of the most wonderfully silly and full of life women I know. Bella Hull, who is taking over the world right now, and everyone should be. Taking. Notes. Hudson Hughes, who makes comedy that is equal parts hilarious and technically amazing.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
Oh yes, this will be my fourth year in a row going to fringe! My accountant is begging me to stop! My accountant is also my dad. There’s something in there to unpack, I’m sure. Anyways …
You have to drink water. Coffee is not water. Gin is not water. White Claw is not water. Gravy is not water.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
I try to sleep as long as I possibly can. I am usually so excited for the day this means sleeping until 8 AM. What to do for the next 13 hours and 45 minutes until my show? I take bagpipe lessons. You can find me busking from the hours of 4 – 7 PM right outside the Edinburgh Castle. I’ve also got a part time job at the House of Fudge. Come in for a free sample!
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Every single year I write this interview, and every single year I say Bobby’s. I love the soup. They put it in a coffee cup so you can guzzle it down without using your hands as you run to Underbelly Cowgate to see a clown perform in a cave-like room. It is perfection.
The buttered ciabatta does require your hands, but it is a nice touch.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
When I was in middle school, I never missed a homework assignment and everyone would call me a teachers’ pet. They were right. However, I had a firm belief: “It’s never uncool to care.” In case it wasn’t clear, I did not have my first kiss until 19. ANYWAYS! Fringe is a wonderful place where it IS cool to care. People love comedy so much. The performers, the audiences, they can’t get enough. And it’s epic — to be around a bunch of people who just love this craft as much as I do!
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Cerys Bradley gave me a tiny tarot card of The World the day before my debut in 2023 which I have carried with me on tour to five countries and always keep in my bag.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
If you stand by the bin with your mouth open as wide as possible, people sometimes get the two confused and pour their unwanted food and beer into your mouth. This is how I ate every meal in 2023, and I saved fortunes!
