Hello! Tell us all about your show!

COPYCAT is a show full of impressions and handmade/analogue design (plus some innovative technical design), that examines Artificial Intelligence and what it’s doing to us and our world. It tells a story about a teacher and a student and looks at the role of imitation in learning and creativity, to ask where this technology is leading and the agency we have in the process.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

My friend and collaborator Dylan Howells is bringing his first solo show to Pleasance, so I’m very excited about that: it’s called FORGET ABOUT ME, and it’s a magical ghost story! Another friend, James Rowland, is bringing his show Team Viking back to Fringe, after more than a decade, so I can’t wait to see that again. I’m also really looking forward to discovering new shows that aren’t on my radar yet.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

I think this will be my 7th year. Advice I remember being given was ‘see as much as you can, and talk to as many people as you can – but also rest and look after yourself!’ These might feel contradictory at times. If you’re new then I’d recommend taking advantage of any Fringe Central events that sound useful to you – they may well help you make the most of this Fringe, and/or be help as you continue to make work. I also think having some sort of routine is good – just a bit of structure, in a busy, overstimulating environment! And don’t underestimate the power of sleep – if you’re feeling like you need an early night then it might be time to have one.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

  • Morning coffee while trying to think of a social media post for that day…
  • Walk near to the venue, with another coffee, and wander nearby while running lines
  • Get ready for the changeover between the previous show and yours (deep breath!)
  • Showtime!
  • Another deep breath, another changeover
  • Lunch, check emails, make a list of anything that needs to get done that day
  • Walk, listen to some music – decompress
  • Work through said to-do list
  • Hang out with friends, maybe see a show
  • SLEEP!

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

Kismot – treat yourself on your day off, it’s amazing!

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

I think having the chance to perform 20 times in a row – especially something you’ve worked on so closely – is a great feeling, great for your craft, and something we don’t always get to do (so enjoy that bit – it’s why you’re there!)

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

I don’t always end up using it, but I usually bring my Nintendo Switch, in case my flatmates fancy some Mario Kart.

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

Try to stock up on things like coffee, fruit, cereal, some instant ramen, soup etc.  Then even if you’re staying further out, you can have at least have breakfasts and late dinners that are reasonably cheap and healthy. For seeing shows, there’s the 2-4-1 days and half price hut.

If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
