Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of Muse. They are such a unique band and whilst I don’t listen to them very much anymore I adore their musicality. Some of their songs are masterpieces and this month I thought I would delve into some of their fantastic music videos.

You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween – Muse

Why did you choose this particular video?

This wasn’t a song I expected to write about and also I forgot it even existed! However, it has nine million views on YouTube so I felt it I had to write about it. I remember watching it and thinking both how good the song is and how creative the video was.

So, what is the narrative?

Masked people enter a spooky looking house and I assume they are intending to rob it and then the house turns on them and becomes all different scenes from horror films.

Favourite parts of the video?

There are so many references to horror films throughout that you spend a lot of the time looking at the references and as soon as you get the film it ends up moving onto the next one. There are many striking ones that stand out such as The Shining and IT.

You can tell a lot of imagination and money that went into this video as the production values are really high. There are so many high end graphics such as blood in the hallway, paintings of the band that sing and hands that burst through the seams. There is also a really effective scene at the end where the masks keep falling off the person.

The different camera angles makes this video work so well. It keeps rotating and you have a lot of fast moving shots as well which makes it feel like a short film and very cinematic. It creates a really fast pace for the video and makes it really enjoyable.
