Sometimes I end up finding inspiration for this article from really bizarre places. Today’s inspiration came from one sentence that was said about Pete Waterman in passing on a podcast episode of Josh Widdicombe’s Museum of Pop Culture.
I cant remember the exact moment that was said but it was about the fact that creative people will always have ideas that will fall flat. I think this relates really well to improv and the way that shows can fall flat.
Let’s be honest, not every show or scene you perform is going to be – your best. In fact there will be many that will fall flat. Sometimes due to your personally not feeling a connection to the scene, sometimes the audience doesn’t respond as you wish and it could even be something else. At the time you feel awful, you feel like it is the last improv show you will do as it in your eyes, “flopped”.
There is a way to think about this – if everything worked out well there would be no challenge in life. You need these ‘fails’ to find out what went wrong and how it can be improved on next time.
It was refreshing hearing Matthew Crosby say this even though it was a passing comment, it stuck with me as I found it really interesting. It also made me want to say something to performers: don’t be hard on yourself we all have bad days.
