Magic Of The Music Video – The Missed Tapes – I Don’t Love You, My Chemical Romance

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are doing something a bit different – since I started this article I have had to choose four or five music videos for each month for the selected band or artist I decide to discuss. However, there are some videos that I love that just miss out on entering the top of my favourites so I thought it would be fin this month to do something called The Missed Tapes and have a look at music videos by bands we have previously covered but did not get a chance to shine in the sun.

I Don’t Love You – My Chemical Romance

Why did you choose this particular video?

I was really spoilt for choice when I wrote about My Chemical Romance as they have so many good music videos. There was one that I didn’t get a chance to speak about it and that is I Don’t Love You. Even though the music video is black and white there is so much to love about this video as it mixes rock with pure emotion.

So, what is the narrative?

A couple which are sort of like cartoon characters to look at have a break up and they end up exploding at the end.

Favourite parts of the video?

Even though the whole video is obviously in black and white it is very clever as a concept as it makes both the emotions and the editing more obvious and prominent. This means that each slot stands out clearly and vividly to create an image of sadness.

The framing is incredibly important in this video – they are predominantly close ups and interesting angles on the shots. These reel you in and make you want to watch more of the video.

The slow motion effect is used a lot in this video where members of the band jump through the air. This creates emotion in the video and emphasises the feelings of the song.
