Magic Of The Music Video – The Missed Tapes – Sad Clown, Panic! At The Disco

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are doing something a bit different – since I started this article I have had to choose four or five music videos for each month for the selected band or artist I decide to discuss. However, there are some videos that I love that just miss out on entering the top of my favourites so I thought it would be fin this month to do something called The Missed Tapes and have a look at music videos by bands we have previously covered but did not get a chance to shine in the sun.

Sad Clown – Panic! At The Disco

Why did you choose this particular video?

In 2021, I wrote about Panic! At The Disco music videos and it meant that I never got to write about any music videos from their last album as it had not been released. There are some really random videos in this era but thought would focus on a song you may not of heard.

So, what is the narrative?

The duke is trying to impress the lead woman in the video and as the narrative goes on and he ends up losing the woman and taking a moment of calm to grief.

Favourite parts of the video?

We are going to start in the middle of the track there is a really bizarre edit sequence with dark colours, blurry version and really quick edit. It is used to tell the narrative but it takes you completely off guard and it is incredibly trippy. It creates a really interesting part of the video.

The graphics are used simply and incredibly effective as when they do appear they are large and are really bold. It means that it pushes the narrative along whilst also creating a real interest part of the video.

The video is sort of like a mini theatre show meaning it has so much drama – whilst a lot of the video is simple edits it means when the fast or really slow motion shots of the water at the end shows it creates the drama you want from the video is very clear.
