Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of the Spice Girls. One of the biggest girl groups to ever walk this planet that also have some really interesting music videos. I thought it would be fun to look at some of their videos and editing techniques used to hit to the masses.
Say You’ll Be There – Spice Girls
Why did you choose this particular video?
The second single to a huge debut is always an interesting one and this video was always on at a time where it was hard to access music videos as it was only places like Top Of The Pops would play them. This was one of the songs that was always on as a music video – has that futuristic feeling to it as well.
So, what is the narrative?
The girls are in the desert have abducted a man and showing off their actions skills whilst waiting for more people to arrive.
Favourite parts of the video?
This video has a real film feel to it as it opens with credits and creates the illusion that the video is an action film. The vibrant colours, the mirrored screens throughout also emphasise this. It also has a lot of edit techniques you see in films which work really well.

Another futuristic style video – this time emphasised with lots of light flares, a metallic background, a glowy boomerang weapon and the makeup and outfits. Simple but effective, very on trend for videos coming up to the Millennium.

Fast and slow editing is used throughout to create the drama of the video which works really well and heightens the narrative.
