Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life – Julian Clary (Live In London)

I have always been a huge fan of podcasts, I have listened to podcasts as far back at 2008 I think it was although I never really listened to them until a few years later. My first real introduction to the world of podcasts was when I was in my last year of university and had to spend hours in the classroom with two of my friends working on our coursework into the very early hours of the morning. It would just be the three of us, myself, Matt and Tom and whilst we were working, the podcasts of The Ricky Gervais show was blasting out into the room. It was in the moment I realised that podcasts can create so much comedy and can really sort of act like a ‘best friend.’

It also sort of created a special bonding moment between the three of us and I am still very much close friends with them today.Over the years, I have learnt that podcasts can really be so much more then the ‘laugh’ and whilst I do listen to a lot of podcasts to help get me through the tough days, the good days and the times I have to work through the night, I also have found that it can be so much more.

Over the years, the idea of what a podcast is has obviously developed, especially with the pandemic and so many more have arisen and so much more content is now available and in a saturated market it can be hard to find really good shows. I have learnt that sometimes episodes of certain podcasts can really have an effect and over time I have shown my appreciation for these episodes on my social media channels.

I have previously spoken about the podcast episode that inspired me to start writing this feature, and you can read more about it here. This week we are returning to a podcast we have spoken about before as it was too good to miss out.

Episode:Julian Clary (Live In London)
Podcast: Off Menu

Before Off Menu there was a YouTube Show that was made by Turtle Canyon Comedy with James Acaster and Ed Gamble. James would try out desserts on Ed’s behalf as they would be too sweet for him to eat due to his diabetes. James would then describe what his experience was of these sweets and how he was enjoying it. It is a fun show and when Off Menu was announced I was excited to listen to it.

“…when he is in an environment where there is nothing off limits his humour is much more rude and that is what makes it great!

I have previously discussed Off Menu before on this article but since then it has grown even more from strength to strength with even live shows now being a part of the roster. One of the live shows they have released was so funny that I felt like I had to include it this time around.

Live podcast shows are very hit or miss – they can either lose the ambience of the show or it can be alive and it can bring in the audience to a whole new fun experience.

Some of the Off Menu live shows have been good and there are some that have not worked as well due to the fact that you should be there in the audience for it to be better. The most hilarious one I have listened to of these live shows is Julian Clary.

The thing about Julian Clary is that when he is on television he is funny but when he is in an environment where there is nothing off limits his humour is much more rude and that is what makes it great!

Live podcast shows are very hit or miss – they can either lose the ambience of the show or it can be alive and it can bring in the audience to a whole new fun experience…”

Each of the sections of the Off Menu episode have a lot of fun jokes along the way and what heightens this episode is the relationship between Acaster and Clary – it is weirdly competitive and intimidating and that is what makes it hilarious!

I really loved this episode and really recommend it as it is a show that will put you in a good mood, allow you to enjoy a live show and laugh a lot.
