Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of Eminem. I have been a fan of the rapper’s work since I was a kid and his music videos are worth watching as they are so different and really fun. I also think he is incredibly creative and that is why it is interesting to analyse some of his videos this month.
Lucky You – Eminem feat Joyner Lucas
Why did you choose this particular video?
This is a completely different era for Eminem and I thought it was a good one to mention, to look at the different style of editing and video that he does. It is, what I would say, sort of an underground video.
So, what is the narrative?
Eminem and Joyner are in a world that looks like the future and is apocalyptical. They are followed by hoodies with red eyes and have a dance off.
Favourite parts of the video?
There are some really quick edits in this video where the red eyed hoodie people appear, and it creates intrigue right from the start. Due to the fact they are so quick, it also sets the pace of the video. The rapping is really fast in the video, from both rappers, just like Eminem videos, there are sections with comedy in as well.
The color grade has elements of green and dirty brown in it to create some shots to feel muddy and toxic, which works really well with this video as it is sort of the apocalypse.
When Eminem gets into the first wrap in near the end, the editing becomes really interesting. It plays with sped up videos as well as focus slowing down footage which has been slowed down and creates a really interesting video experience, especially for the audience. The editing when there is a dance off as well is really fun and creates a lot of humour.
