Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of Eminem. I have been a fan of the rapper’s work since I was a kid and his music videos are worth watching as they are so different and really fun. I also think he is incredibly creative and that is why it is interesting to analyse some of his videos this month.
Stan – Eminem
Why did you choose this particular video?
This is not one of my favourite videos but it has to be explored and talked about. This is a video that blew Eminem up in the UK and it is not hard to see why. It is well before it’s time and the storytelling is phenomenal. It is a very unique music video.
So, what is the narrative?
A fan takes his obsession too far and when Eminem doesn’t reply to his letters he tries to kill himself and his wife.
Favourite parts of the video?
The first thing that is super effective in this video is the colour grade. There is a hint of green and blue and throughout which gives the video a dark look and really elevates the narrative of the song and the video. The more obsessed this fan becomes the more green the shot comes and that is incredibly clever.
The light is used so cleverly on this video, whilst it is used to connote the lights, and it is sort of used as a metaphor for the obsession breaking him and his relationship. In the car near the end, the light is incredibly bright to connote the darkness and the way the obsession is going it creates really interesting shadows.
The editing is really simple in this video, but it needed to be to create the drama and emotion connected to the narrative. There are a few fades here and there and Focus blurs. This is what makes this video so powerful and effective.
