Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of S Club 7, there are so many reasons why I decided to kick off the year with this band. Firstly they are incredibly uplifting to start 2026 and I think it is a fun pop band to look at. They were around everywhere in the late nineties and early noughties as they were not just a pop band, they also had a television show on CBBC, even auditioned for S Club 8 and had a film. So let’s delve into the world this month.
You’re My Number One – S Club 7
Why did you choose this particular video?
I was going to write about another video of S Club 7’s but this came on after Never Had A Dream Come True on YouTube and felt I should write about it. Last week we spoke about a white themed video with a lot of quick edits that didn’t really work well. This particular song comes from an earlier album which means that a lot of the focus was on fun and showing them having a great time and it uses very simple techniques to create this.
So, what is the narrative?
The group is just having a lot of fun singing and then there is a random foam party in the end.
Favourite parts of the video
Throughout this video, there are short, quick edits between shots that feel like they go to the beat of the song. IT works really well as it reels you into the music video and makes you want to be part of it and have lots of fun!
This is a simple video set up and the main parts of it are the white background and a dance routine. The editing is different throughout so that it highlights the dance routine in fun and simple ways. It is also a way of making a cheap video whilst also creating and making the dance routine the star.
There is only one part that has a different style of editing and that is right at the beginning when the first verse starts. When the band are in a dance line queue thing, there is an edit technique where you see three different versions of the band pop up. It goes in time to the beat and creates an element of fun to the video again.
