Improv Corner – The Magic Of Big Mirror Scenes

Generated with Ai

I was incredibly fortunate to start my adventures in improv under the wings of Bev and Ian of The Suggestibles in Newcastle. I learnt so much from them and feel it is things that have been valuable to me throughout my time of learning.

Looking through my improv diaries that I have kept over the years, there was something that they taught which was so valuable I cannot believe that I haven’t mentioned it again since I originally wrote about it.

We have spoken about mirroring on this article before but what about on a much larger scale? That is when it sort of becomes really interesting.

In one of the lessons I took with Bev and Ian they made the whole class focus on mirroring by using our bodies to make a plane on stage – some people where the body, others were the wings – it would only work if we thought and focussed on symmetry.

That is not all – we all had to move to make it look like a plane which was interesting as you had to really concentrate on what you were doing.

Large mirror objects are fantastic and it really should be used more in shows as it is really impressive to see things come to life. Imagine an improvised bird – that would be so creative and effective watching people pretending to be the wings and make them flap.

The big style of mirroring could be a really interesting thing to do. It would be unpredictable – even just a hint could make a show really come to life.
