Magic of the Music Video – George Michael Month – Faith

Welcome BACK to the Magic of The Music Video feature! We have been having a break from this but now it is back and this time it is on the new day of Saturday afternoons! Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of George Michael and taking a look at some of the videos that I personally feel have some great editing techniques.

Faith – George Michael

Why did you choose this particular video?

I know you probably thought I was going to sneak in a Wham-A-Geddon for you this week but no, you can hear and see that video at anytime so let’s focus on a classic and iconic song instead – Faith. A simple and a fantastic iconic music video.

So, what is the narrative?

George is dancing around a jukebox whilst playing a guitar and surrounded by women

Favourite parts of the video?

The use of colour is utilised so well in this video, especially at the beginning. The way that it is all black and white and then these purple heals and jeans appear. It creates this sexy and cool vibe. The way that the colour seeps into the video is fantastic and creates a really striking video and makes you immediately pay attention.

The use of camera shots are phenomenal in this video. Such a fantastic use of two shots with the juke box, close ups and long shots. The way it is filmed makes you pay attention and portray that this is a unique and incredibly striking video.

I love the editing in this video. The way it jumps between the really claustrophobic close ups to these fun long shots to create a video you can not stop watching. It is addictive. Quick, energising and really defies what makes a great music video.
