The one thing I love about music is that everyone has their own story to tell – the musician, the lyrics, the way the fans decipher them and also the way a song can also create a memory or a meaning to someone.
Since Five have reunited this year and are doing a tour all of this moth, I thought it would be fun to have a break from Movie Memories and 100 Weeks Of Discovery (which will both return in 2026) and return to the feature Music Memories to look at Five every week of November.
I was quite young when Five were around but I loved them. Their first album was my first ever CD (had tapes before) and I still have it to this day! Lots of their songs have memories for me attached so thought would write about them every Tuesday!
Track: Mr Z
Artist: Five
Original Release Date: 1999
The album Invincible is one of my favourite pop albums. I still have my cassette version of it and it is one of those albums that I have to listen to the whole way through if I ever listen to it. There are so many good songs on it that always make me smile and bring back memories.
Mr Z was a song that was on the second side of the cassette version of the album, it was never one of my favourites but I felt like I had to talk about it this month.
I used to love to learn how to rap ( I spent ages learning all the lyrics to Do You Really Like It by Pied Piper that I can still say it word to word identical) and even now I love the poetry of acts such as Eminem. I think I really have to praise the song Mr Z or my interest in ‘rapping’ as I think this was one of the first songs that I learnt how to do it.
Jay was one of my favourite members of Five (apart from Scott when I was really young to then Richie as I got older) because I adored his rapping voice. I used to spend ages trying to mimic the body movements and facial expressions in music videos (when you did get a chance to see them as there was no internet in the nineties as such) and used to always try and rap like him. One of my favourite lyrics from this song is the second verse when he starts to spell out M_I S T E R Z HE, i adored it and thought it was so clever and as a kid around 9/10 spent ages learning how to do it.
It is a silly song but I have some great memories from it.
