Movie Memories – This Week – Palm Springs

Films are something that we all look towards for escapism – the action, the humour, the romance, the animation. Sometimes these can hold so much more meaning then just an image on a screen and create narratives and memories in our own lives. Welcome to the sister article to Music Memories where we take a look at some of these personal stories attached to films.

Film: Palm Springs
Original Release Date: 2020

If there is one thing then I am not a fan of then it is films that constantly repeat the same scenarios over and over again like Groundhog Day. I just get pretty bored of them and they irritate me. I try to avoid films like this as I am just not a fan, However one night I decided to watch Palm Springs to keep me company on a night shift.

I went into this film already prepared not to enjoy it. To be honest, I had only decided to watch it because I was a fan of Andy Samberg – some of his films were bad but some were good so I felt I would take the time to give it a go.

I went into this film automatically thinking negatively about it – however my opinions started to gradually change, not because of Andy Samberg but because it was actually an interesting film.

I enjoyed the concept and it was slightly different to the repetitive films and that was why I liked it.

Sometimes watching something you don’t want to can change your ideas about it and that is why I wanted to write about it. I won’t ever be a ‘fan’ of this genre but I appreciated the different approach.

Facts about Palm Springs

  • Sarah contacts a physicist named Clifford Johnson. This is the name of an actual scientist who worked on the movie, helping the filmmakers come up with an original premise for a time-loop story.
  • Andy Samberg said that multiple endings were written and even shot. They held private friends and family screenings of the different versions to get opinions on which ending worked. Samberg jokes, “All right, it might not be perfect but everyone liked it!”
  • The early scene where Nyles seamlessly moves across the dance floor was captured in five takes.
  • Shot over 21 days.
