Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hi, I’m Grace Helbig. I’m a silly, tall girl from New Jersey (though my grandmother was from England, so technically I’m one of you). I’m most known for making internet content. I stumbled into the world on digital content creation and became an OG YouTuber back in 2010 and have ridden the internet wave for fifteen years.
Two years ago, I got diagnosed with breast cancer, completely out of the blue. It was a whacky adventure and thankfully I’m in remission now. But out of that experience came my first comedy hour, Let Me Get This Off My Chest, which I’m debuting at Fringe this year.
Tell us all about your show!
Let Me Get This Off My Chest is a storytelling show about my unexpected journey through breast cancer treatment in 2023-2024. It’s a lighthearted look at the dark moments; sharing the lessons I learned along the way mixed with some surprising confessions. Breast cancer can be funny!
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’m excited to see everything I can! I was stuck inside for most of 2023 so I’m making up for lost time. I’m going to move wherever the flyers blow me.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
This is my fringe debut! I’ve heard from other performers that it’s beautifully brutal. It’s a cacophony of incredible art and artists pouring their vulnerabilities onto stages everywhere. I imagine it might be like going to Disney World on mushrooms. I am ready to be overwhelmed!
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to pushing the boundaries of my performance. My show is very personal, and I’ve never performed under such a rigorous schedule. In a way it’s kind of like breast cancer treatment…I’m throwing myself into something physically and emotionally demanding and hoping it makes me better in the end. Fringe is like cancer treatment? What an encouraging metaphor. I’m also looking forward to seeing the beautiful city!
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
I’m not sure yet. I assume it’ll be something like wake up from a symphony of anxiety dreams, assess the state of my bowels, pace and panic, drink caffeine, reassess the state of my bowels, lay down and panic, eat something beige and bland, bowels?, listen to Jock Jams on repeat, quiet panic, perform, post-performance panic, eat melatonin until I’m knocked out into a symphony of anxiety dreams.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
I’m currently taking recommendations. Ideally, anything that doesn’t give me explosive diarrhea.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
I’ve never worked on such a personal piece that I’m so proud of. I suppose this is how mother’s feel about their children? I wouldn’t know, I have a dog. I’m excited to put my show up at such a world renown festival. This is a bucket list item being checked. I can’t wait to experience the fever dream of a festival in all its glory.
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
I hear every performer has a mental breakdown to some degree at some point. Really looking forward to that. Excited to see how it happens for me. Will it be debilitating? Will it happen immediately? Will I take it out on my husband? So many beautiful unknowns!
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
I’m bringing my husband with me! That’ll be good. I’m also bringing my most favorite medications and a sleep mask with built in headphones so I can fall asleep to the shrill track of an oscillating fan just like at home.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
I’m not sure yet, but I assume spending the majority of my time in my AirBnB panicking about my performance and eating toast will save me some money.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
If I had to guess without going, I’d say deodorant, a good attitude, and my therapist’s phone number
what’s the secret to successful flyering?
A complete lack of shame?
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
I’m @gracehelbig on Instagram and YouTube and @thisisgracehelbig on TikTok
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
I had cancer
