Hello! Tell us about yourself?
I’m a crazy half Japanese and Jewish gay musical comedian based in Los Angeles.
Tell us all about your show!
Haus of Dy-lan is a hour of high energy storytelling and musical comedy. I talk about growing up with a gay twin brother, the woes of being biracial, getting bullied in school, screaming at my therapist, and my Japanese Grandpa who signed up to be a Kamikaze pilot during WWII. All woven together by jaunty musical themes.
How did you come up with the name of your show you’re taking to Fringe?
Haus of Dy-lan refers to one of the first jokes I do in the show where I talk about doing a comedy show hosted by a kind, well-intentioned white woman who thought my name was actually pronounced “Dy-lan”. I say that “Dy-lan” is actually my Vogue house name. Hence the title “Haus of Dy-lan”
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’m looking forward to seeing Stamptown, Ismael Loutfi, Grace Helbig, and Nish Kumar. I also love drag so much so I’m excited to see as many drag shows as I possibly can. Also I’m a huge fan of Tim Minchin so if he makes an appearance at the Fringe I will definitely be attending!
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
I’ve never been to the Fringe before but I’ve gotten the advice to flyer as much as possible, watch and do as many shows as I can, and to explore the beautiful city of Edinburgh.
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to being around so many likeminded people. I’ve heard that it’s like everyone is in their senior year of art school and performing their pieces of work. I’m excited to be immersed in that and see other people’s shows.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
My friend Sam Morrison brought me the best fudge I’ve ever had in my life back from Edinburgh so I will be looking for that fudge place for the entire festival.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
I’m very excited to share my solo show and to get the experience of performing it so many times consecutively. Also Scottish men are very hot so I’m excited for that!
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
People have told me that keeping up endurance is the hardest part which is why I’m bringing fifty packages of Celsius.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Chlamydia. Just kidding. I will be bringing my diary.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
I’m saving by bringing my own poppers to the festival.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Netty Pot, Vocal Spray, Katana
what’s the secret to successful flyering?
Nerves of Steel and a Samurai Hat as I’ve been told.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the Fringe?
By coming to see Haus of Dy-lan at the Pleasance Beside at 19:30! Also I’ve heard that the Edinburgh castle is beautiful so I can’t wait to see it in person. I’ve been looking at pictures of it on the internet
