Hello! Tell us about yourself?

I’m a poker-playing, over-parenting, amateur-cook stand-up comedian that lives with her ex, and ticks so many boxes (filipina, autistic, WOMAN) that you’d be forgiven for wondering why I haven’t won all the awards already. Well, come see my show and decide for yourself if I should? 🙂

Tell us all about your show!

Riabellion is going to be exactly what it says on the tin. It’s an hour of saying what needs to be said, by someone who you definitely didn’t expect to say it! I’m planning on having a lot of fun for an hour, the kind of jokes that will pop back into your brain when you least expect it, so you get more than just an hour’s worth for your money.

How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the fringe?

I like to use my name in the title, my first tour was “Riawakening” and “Riabellion” felt like the natural sequel. Narcissist much? But at least you know it’s my show.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

I am so excited to be up for the whole month, I am planning on seeing as wide a range of shows as possible. One from every section of the programme (including Children’s Shows!) is a must, towards the end of the month, one with every star rating review – from one star to five stars. A range of free and ticketed events. It’s the only way to truly do the festival. Top to bottom, left to right, inside out and morning till night.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

I did the festival many years ago, pre-pandy. This is my first festival back in a while and I suspect things have changed since I was last there and I’m the one that could do with advice! But from memory I know that pacing yourself is important, everything in moderation, and sleep and eat as well as you can. Oh, and block the first two weeks of September off because you’re gonna need it!

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

My show is at 2:25pm in Cabaret Voltaire, and I am staying about 15mins away by walking, but I am also a mum who won’t have her kids with her for most of the month soooooo I am going to sleep, do my show, once a week have a massage and sleeeeeeeeeeep. If I have other shows, I will wake up, do those, then sleep again. Oh, and I will wake up for the other shows I have planned to see as well. I’m not sleeping for all of August am I.

What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?

Plan your viewing schedule, don’t forget to schedule meals and don’t feel bad if what you see is bad – even bad art can be entertaining – just perhaps not for the reasons they intended.

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

  • City Cafe for breakfast.
  • Anything Japanese for my main meal
  • The German sausage cart for every other time

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

It’s like Groundhog Day, but without having to kiss Bill Murray, same show same time everyday. If you love the arts/working in the arts, then this festival is your Disneyland but with SO many more rides. And you go for 30 days and not just the weekend!

Top tips for travelling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?

Only see shows in the same venue. Simples.

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

  1. A great show
  2. A study resolve
  3. A raincoat

what’s the secret to successful flyering?

Genuinely, do it for a friend and have them do it for you. It’s SO much easier to push someone else’s amazingness than boast about your own. Also, don’t take rejection personally. They don’t know what they’re missing when they say no.

Also, don’t waste flyers on people who you just don’t want in your show. All of these tips are vital to keep you sane while flyering, but I can’t guarantee you’ll fill your audience with them.

If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?

I’m on all the platforms. If you search “Ria Lina” you’ll find me. If you’re on more than one platform please follow me on all of them cause nobody but us will know you’re duplicated in the numbers

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

It’s F***** Great.
