How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the Camden fringe?
We were originally working on a show called ‘Word Wrestling’, a sort of parody of WWE but instead of well choreographed stunts it was two men battling with poetry, but when we started writing together and the story came through we started thinking about Taylor Swift’s album title ‘The Tortured Poet’s Department’ and from that John pitched ‘The Dead Good Poets Society’ and we immediately loved it. The next day bizarrely we were filming a music video with TV’s Alex Horne and when he heard the name he loved it too! So that really cemented it.
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
A beautiful mix of stand up, poetry and storytelling. Imagine Tim Key and Shakespeare got together for a mad lash and this would be the outcome.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
We are really looking forward to see Matt Lowes stand up show, In Your Endo, as well as James Murphy and Dick Denham’s Two Weird Guys Who Are Gay split bill. All very funny acts we have been privileged to perform alongside before.
How are rehearsals going?
Rehearsals are going great, our first work in progress was an absolute blast and we kind of surprised ourselves how slick it was on a first run out. Between then and it’s Camden Fringe debut has been a lot of work making it slicker and better, with a few changes and surprises thrown in!
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden fringe?
The amazing venues and community that has been built around the Camden Fringe, plus the amount of fantastic acts and shows on offer for such reasonable prices.
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
‘Spoons breakfast, Meal Deal Lunch, potentially a celebratory curry post-show. Or on a more serious note, give yourself realistic ambitions, from room size to ticket prices, there is no ceiling, but you have to work bloody hard to continue reaching the next levels.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
To go full circle with the shows story, from it’s early inception and speaking to him right at the start, it would be lovely to have Alex Horne to see the show (and to immediately offer us the first ever double act entry on Taskmaster).
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this year’s pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Huffs McGraw, we will not be explaining our reasoning.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?
We are both on instagram at @jackscullioncomedy and @johnjamesdavies.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
It’s. Bloody. Brilliant.
