Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hi! My name is Chiedza Mimz Rwodzi. I’m an award-winning Zimbabwean actress, performance coach and storyteller that moved to the UK over a decade ago. I’m passionate about using the arts to inspire healing, connection and social change. I co-founded Unshaded Arts, a theatre company spotlighting underrepresented voices. Through every platform I champion creativity as a force for collective growth and personal transformation.
Tell us all about your show!
“Strangers and Revelations” first started as a short play that was performed in our inaugural writing event Universal at Omnibus Theatre in 2022. Following this the show was developed into a full-length play that premiered at the Kenya National Theatre in Nairobi for the Kenya International Theatre Festival (KITFest)in 2024. Strangers & Revelations follows Zodwa into Malcolm’s house after a last-minute change of plan. As they connect through shared experiences of their roots, romantic mishaps and ghosts from the past, they reveal more about themselves and start to uncover deeper truths and shared griefs. Grounded in mythology and trauma, this production is an exploration of identity and the power dynamics between men and women through an African lens
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I don’t have particular shows I’ve planned to watch yet, there’s a lot of variety so deciding is proving to be rather lengthy process, but I do intend to watch something from each genre (hopefully!) I’m particularly keen on watching a spoken word show, a comedy show, cabaret and dance! Would be keen to check out some exhibitions too!
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
I’ve never done the fridge before, but I’ve been advised to be open and to be present. To create my own fringe experience instead of following a rigid way of doing things. Oh, the weather I hear is very unpredictable so it’s wise to ensure you’ve packed for every possible outcome. Someone told me to have a map and to pre plan the shows you’re particularly interested to watch before arrival. I was also told not to watch every single show, though I don’t imagine anyone could even if they tried!
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
I’m look forward to so much to be honest! I’m excited to perform in a city I’ve never performed in before. I look forward to connecting with other artists and watching some of the shows that will be at the fringe. I also can’t wait to see the beautiful architecture and experience the rich history and culture of the place.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Wake up and say a little prayer for the day, listen to some empowering music that gets me feeling like badass, eat some food to energize me then get into my actress zone where I warm up, get into character and block out the world. The show starts at mid-day so I would imagine after I perform for a whole 50 minutes, I would be incredibly hungry again so I would eat some lunch then find a show to go watch and support!
Ok, where is your favorite place to eat at the Fringe?
Considering this would be my first time, it’s really open gates! I’m open to trying out different foods that are available. I particularly want to sit in different pubs within the area and try out their chips. I’ve always been a fan of pub food particularly the chips! Can’t wait to rate some of the chips and see how they compare, I’m a massive foodie! Check out my TikTok to find out my ratings.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
The fact that the Edinburgh Fringe is the biggest theatre festival in the world AND the reality that I get to part of it is mind blowing. I think it’s something you just have to experience as an artist. From what I have heard and seen in pictures it looks like a sight to behold so I can only imagine how electric and thrilling the vibe will be. I’m grateful that I get to be part of it!
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
This would be my first time so I really don’t know what to expect so that in itself will be a wild ride! I would imagine with so many shows on offer there is a lot of competition. It might be a challenge to ensure there’s an audience every single day but I’m ready to take on the challenge.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Nothing from home but I’m going to buy a little special journal to document my first fringe experience. This is not only my first fringe experience but my writer debut so very exciting times! I can’t wait to look back on it when it’s all over and celebrate such an important and life changing milestone in my career.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
No hacks but I would imagine as a team we might cook our meals in batches. So, I would say meal prep every Sunday and have as many packed lunches as we can! Probably setting a weekly budget and not going over it would also be useful.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Grit, Confidence and your body I would hope!
what’s the secret to successful flyering?
I would say getting to know the local community and having genuine conversations with the shop owners in areas, so they don’t just put your flyer up in their store but talk to people about your show too. The key is to have those genuine connections with people and share your art that way. Also stay hydrated and block out at least a few hours so you can effectively cover different streets. I always suggest trying to flyer close to the area you will be performing so it’s easier access for your audience.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?
People can follow my personal account on Instagram @mimz_07. I am also very active on TikTok posting entertaining and positive content. My TikTok is @mimz7089 . Catch me on twitter on occasion here –> @Miss_Rwodzi. You can also follow our company account @unshadedarts which will have some exciting information about our shows too!
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
My show is Captivating, Dramatic & Heartfelt.
