Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hello! I’m Amelia, 5”6, a Gemini and I am a stand-up rap comedian. I am doing my debut stand up hour of comedy this year at Edinburgh Fringe. My debut comedy rap album will be premiering alongside it too!
Tell us all about your show!
It’s a stand-up rap extravaganza all about leaving your mark, or not. My generation grew up being told we’re special, but realistically, what do you do with that? How do you fulfil your potential if you were told it’s endless?
Forget Me Not is an anthem for anyone who wants to be everything: a lover and a fighter, a rapper and a woman in STEM, to be famous but also to be forgotten.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Oh my word SO MANY. This is a beautiful and horrible question because I want to list so many brilliant, brilliant people.
Can I completely cop out of this and just say something new that I didn’t expect?
When I came up as a student I remember stumbling across a show called Hyprov. In it, Colin Mochrie would improvise with members of the audience who had been hypnotised by Asad Mecci. Where else do you find that?
I am looking forward to finding some hidden gems like this that I can’t believe are real shows.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe?
I have done a split bill and a work in progress show before. I think the key piece of advice I would tell anyone is to go and see lots of other shows. That saved me. You can easily get wrapped up in your show and the stresses that come with it. If you go and see the shows of people you love and respect you will be continuously inspired and have a great time.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Ha! Routine. What a lovely joke. I think any remnants of routine go out the window as soon as you cross the Scottish border. Every day is so different at the Fringe. Whether it’s a late night out, a gig heavy day with more time on stage than off it or a day of existential spiral where you question all your life decisions. The routine is mainly a menu of self-doubt, adrenaline and joy.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Well, I can tell you where it’s going to be and that’s right out of the freezer. My sister and her boyfriend are coming to visit in the first week and have promised to cook me a batch of healthy meals I can freeze and have when I need them. A gift sent from God- yes, correct.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Can I have two? Firstly, the people. It is such a privilege to be able to spend intense time with your friends and have some brilliant experiences with people you love. Secondly, getting to perform my own show every day. I love it so much. And actually, I am going to have a third while I’m at it, the magic. There is truly no place like it and I feel so lucky I get to experience being a part of it all.
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
Prioritising. You want to preserve your voice. You want to go party. You want to see loads of other shows. You want to rest. It’s a constant battle between conflicting wants and needs.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
I bring my entire home. I’m an overpacker. I look like I’ve been burgled after shoving the car with all my worldly possessions. Something I do like to do in the first couple of days is go to a charity shop and find a great mug to use over the fringe. There is NOTHING that can beat a cup of tea before bed so to have a special mug to drink this out of is lovely.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Get too nervous to eat. Then you only need two drinks to get drunk because you haven’t had dinner.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Ibuprofen. A good moisturiser. A PUFFER JACKET!
I’ve forgotten to bring a warm coat for the last two years and have needed to buy one. You think August might be warm but some days Edinburgh forgets that it is meant to be summer.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
Get an American to do it. They are brilliant.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
You can follow me @ameliahamiltoncomedy
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
I. F******. Rap.
