Hello! Tell us about yourself?
I’m Kathy Maniura, a character comedian who loves stupid comedy (I use the word with the utmost respect). Some things about me: I can’t see a blue plaque without stopping to read it, I got cowboy boots off Vinted that fit perfectly and I will NOT stop talking about it, I always underestimate how long everything will take (I end up running places a lot, often clomping in my boots). I’m currently performing as The Cycling Man.
Tell us all about your show!
It’s an hour long character comedy show about The Cycling Man – an obnoxious middle aged guy who’s newly single, deeply involved with cycling and on the verge of a breakdown. Expect bravado, Powerpoint presentations, unsolicited cycling advice and even more unsolicited songs from an increasingly unstable man.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
So so many silly people about! I can’t wait to see Lachlan Werner, the greatest queer ventriloquist, Alice Cockayne’s weird, sexy characters, Cabbage the Clown’s stunningly creative drag, Lorna Rose Treen’s legendary smorgasbord of characters, Su Mi’s punky weirdos, Derek Mitchell’s dark, theatrical masterpiece. And that’s barely scratching the surface!!
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
Yes! I would say pace yourself and keep clear in your mind the things in your control and the things beyond it. What you can control is doing a good show every day, looking after yourself, seeing some wonderful stuff and meeting brilliant people. Don’t measure your success with the other stuff, because you’ll lose it.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Wake up late, check ticket sales. Shower and eat, check ticket sales. Walk into town, bump into several comedians I know, talk about ticket sales, check ticket sales. Flyer, eat a jacket potato hunched on a step. Get into costume, do the bloody show, feel good and/or bad and then go and marvel at some other brilliant shows. 3am crepe, bed too late.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Did I mention the crepes?? Panquake I love you. A nutella crepe in the middle of the night?? C’mon!!
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Being all up in it – seeing so many other wonderful performers’ shows from all around the world, feeling part of a community of people trying to create something for the love of it, existing in this wonderful bubble of pure creativity for a whole month. Magic.
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
Being all up in it – seeing so many other wonderful performers’ shows, existing in a bubble for a whole month. No rest! No perspective! Brutal.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Probably not doing the Fringe.
what’s the secret to successful flyering?
Have a very pithy opening line, smile, and turn off the part of your brain that feels shame.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@kathykathymm on instagram and tiktok
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Silly, good-natured drag.
