Hello! Tell us about yourself?
I am Joe Sib—stand-up comedian, musician, and co-founder of SideOneDummy Records (Gaslight Anthem, Flogging Molly, Gogol Bordello). I have toured the world fronting bands, signed some of your favorite artists that have produced gold records, and now I tell stories on stage that are loud, funny, and full of heart.
Tell us all about your show!
California Calling is a high energy one-man show about growing up punk in the ‘80s, chasing dreams, and figuring out how to stay true to yourself. It is storytelling meets stand-up, with music, photos, and moments that will make you laugh, cry, and want to start a band.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Anyone that is pushing the limits and pouring their heart out on stage. Comics, storytellers, musicians, weird performance artists. I am into the whole vibe. But I especially have my eye on stand-ups who bring something different to the mic.
Have you done the fringe before? No, first time. What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe?
The best advice I have received is do not chase anyone else’s path. Just do your show, give everything you have, and do not measure success by ticket sales or reviews.
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
The mixed energy of madness and excitement. Being surrounded by creatives from all over the world who are just trying to connect with an audience.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe.
Wake up, get coffee, do some writing, see where I can tweak the show, get outside, go for a walk, eat something healthy, catch a show, hang at my venue, and take time to get in the zone.
Ok, where is your favorite place to eat at the Fringe?
I will probably find one spot with great protein and eat there every day. I am a total creature of habit.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
You get to be fully alive with no safety nets. Just you and your story in a room full of people you have never met. It is terrifying and beautiful.
What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?
Keeping your energy up every single day while navigating the mental rollercoaster of ticket sales, reviews, and whether anyone knows you exist.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Everything I need is in my phone; photos of people I love, and all my jams I listen to daily.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Cook my own meals. Say yes to the free drink tickets. Walk everywhere—it clears your head and keeps the pounds off!
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
A portable charger, bottom wipes, and boxes of tissues for how much crying you’ll be doing while asking yourself, “What was I thinking?”
what’s the secret to successful flyering?
Having a few pints and telling people that Metallica might show up.
