Hello! Tell us about yourself?

I’m Tom. From Bristol. And other places. I make fun theatre with my mate Xavier and take it places. We like to get good reviews and awards when they come our way.

Tell us all about your show!

I like animals. But 10 years ago, in drama training, my teacher said I was crap at doing animal impressions. So I decided to make show about it doing as many animal impressions as I can in the space of an hour. The source of the animal names is a scientific red list of currently extinct and endangered species.

Many of these names are poetic, comic, sad, absurd and stupid. So I made a poignant and tragicomic show about a guy trying and failing to perform these names. In 2019, the Wild Thing! predecessor, Vigil, did really well and the Edinburgh Fringe and has toured internationally. Since the pandemic, the list on which it is based has doubled in size. I felt compelled to make a new show about this, exploring what extinction and biodiversity mean in a post pandemic, Trump-fuelled world. Let’s see what happens…

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

The John Tavener concert at the international festival. Insane circus from Australia. And obscure and bonkers stuff that you find on the Free Fringe.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

There are some great campsites. Accommodation is the most expensive things and camping can save you.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

Get up. Go for a run. Do my lunchtime slot. See a show or two. Network. Go home. Sleep. Repeat.

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

My van.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

Connecting with audiences.

What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?

Getting s**** reviews for something you believe in.

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

Almond butter. It goes with everything.

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

Camp.

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

Body, mind and soul.

What’s the secret to successful flyering?

Don’t bother. Just talk to people. Word of mouth wins.
