Improv

Improv Corner – Character Building – Sheldon Cooper

Whilst this may not be directly focussed on improv, I think that characters are an important part of it – this is why I am starting a new feature called Character Building.

I came up with this idea the other day when I was watching Brooklyn 99 and some of the characters were so fascinating when I thought about it, I decided that character analysis could be interesting.

Obviously, improv is made up on the spot but looking at other characters can create inspiration for ideas you can take away to help develop your own personas in the future.

Today we are looking at a comedy character with a whole lot of Bazinga.

This Week’s Character – Sheldon Cooper

Why This character?

Sheldon Cooper is such an awkward character, especially in the earlier seasons that it makes them the perfect comedy character. He acts so innocent with everything he says that is why it makes him so hilarious and a great character to look at when it comes to improv.

Personality traits that are great

  • Awkwardness – he is so awkward in natural and normal situations that it can make it really hilarious to watch.
  • Sheldon believes everything he says is right and true – this means that it is a great thing for improv. He is such a straight character that it naturally creates the comedy.

What we can learn for Improv Characters?

  • The comedic foil in a scene can create so much comedy if they play it super plain and stick to their guns the whole way through – it can be really hilarious and up the anti.
  • I know Sheldon is a scientist and has a lot of long science terms but add some made up long words to the scenes and it will create some humour – if you believe what you are saying to be true, everyone else will as well.
  • No matter what happens, don’t laugh and it will heighten the scene.
