Welcome the feature where we ask musicians or bands five really tough questions about music! Today I speak to Adult Leisure who are supporting The Twang at the Bristol O2 Academy on the 18th of this month.
What is the hardest lyric you have ever had to write and why?
The hardest lyric I’ve ever had to write came after the passing of my mother. It took me years to find the right words to truly honour her memory and the pain I was feeling. Grief is such a personal thing, and I found that expressing it in a way that felt authentic and healing was incredibly difficult.
It wasn’t until we started working on the song “You Weren’t There When I Needed” that I was able to begin putting those feelings into a song. Collaborating with Dave, our guitarist, was a turning point. His support and insight helped me find the peace I had been searching for in my words. That song became my way of processing the loss, and finally, I felt I could pay tribute to my mother in a meaningful way.
What is the weirdest gift or compliment a fan has given you?
Haha I wouldn’t say weird, and certainly not a gift or compliment, but being asked to sign a Man City shirt by a fan, when we are all Arsenal or Man Utd supporters has to go down as our most mental fan interaction!
Who is the best band or musician you have had the pleasure to share the stage with?
The Family Rain – had been fans of those lads for years and then to get asked to support them on their UK tour was just madness. Great lads too and lovely to be able to call them our pals now.
What one of your songs has been the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?
I’d say ‘All Our Days Are Now So Quiet’ leading up to our EP release show back in 2023 – the song has sax, several vocal harmonies and it meant we got more people in to play it live with us, and conducting that many people can be challenging, however, what came out was this Talking Heads-y Stop Making Sense-y epic thing. Quite the moment that felt like at the time actually whilst I think about it.
Dream Collaboration and why?
Miley Cyrus on one of our upcoming singles next year… her voice would be mint on it… so Miley, if you’re reading and up for it?
