New Album Deep Dive – INTERVIEW – Even Us Ghosts, Bottlemoth

Welcome to the feature where we sit down and talk to bands and artists about their latest albums to find out all about it. Today we speak to Ethan from the band Bottlemoth about the new album Even Us Ghosts.

Hello nice to meet you, tell us about yourself!

Hey! My name is Ethan from the band Bottlemoth. We formed this year in January, and have just released our first record. We are a 5 piece indie folk act, who would love to be a rock band.

Tell us about the new album

We produced and recorded the album at my house, learning lots from YouTube tutorials and borrowing equipment from friends for favours. It’s a 10 track record that digs deep into life through your twenties; we’ve poured a lot of heart into it. It’s available now on our website, bandcamp and everywhere that streaming is.

Favourite track in new album and why?

At the moment my favourite is ‘Hold me like you know me’. It’s a song about doing your best to understand others, and be accepted yourself amidst the self doubt we can swirl in.

Tell us a bit about the recording process, was it fun to do?

It was super fun! We experimented with lots of cool pedals, instruments and recording techniques. Doing everything ourselves, we had limitations of course – but that in itself set challenges to overcome. Overall, we are incredibly proud of the record.

What inspired the album name?

It takes a lot to find yourself, and I think we are all going through that constantly. It can make you feel like a ghost where you’re not necessarily seen by others, and the line ‘Even us ghosts’ is two-fold. Firstly, even us ghosts can make it – secondly, even us ghosts are here.

Tell us the idea behind the album cover?

A lot of the imagery through the record is based on oceans parallel to feeling low, skies being our ambitions, and people feeling like ghosts in that metaphor. The lighthouse idea was Chessa’s who put together all the artworks across the record. It’s to show there’s always a way through.

What one of your songs on the new album do you think will be the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?

We are adding a lot of new elements to the live show that are really exciting for us. ‘Hold me like you know me’ has a real choral element, so we will have to make some decisions on how we showcase that live without everyone we asked to sing from the record.

Why should people listen to the album?

I’ve listened to this record more than any other record now in the process of making it, and I still feel immensely proud of the tracks we’ve put together. I hope it’s a record that people will resonate with, and ultimately want to repeat over and over.
