Welcome to the feature where we talk to musicians about some of their favourite things about the industry. Today we speak to Travels With Brindle that recently released Tryouts For The Human Race. Today I find out their favourite things about the music industry.
What is your Favourite:
Favorite song I’ve written:
Probably “Ivan” or “Linden Street,” or “Where’s Francesca.” Those are the ones that feel like they wrote themselves.
Favorite musician:
Jake Shimabukuro makes the ukulele sound incredible.
Film or TV show:
Jaws. I’m a New England girl and it feels like the Massachusetts of my early years.
Venue to perform at:
The Midway in Jamaica Plain or Mass Ave and Holyoke in Cambridge, both in Massachusetts, because I’ve played there the most and they feel like home.
Item to take with you on tour:
Knitting project!
Instrument:
banjolele.
Song to play live:
“Beat the Clock.” I’ve never played a song with a solo before!
Album by another musician:
“I So Liked Spring” by Linda Smith. Linda left a door open for a lot of us home recording artists, and this album introduced me to the poet Charlotte Mew.
Memory of tour:
Busking for a bunch of second graders from Montreal, who all sang along with “Forever Young” by Alphaville when I played it.
Era for music:
1970s New York. This is such a cliche answer, but it seems like all my favorite records came out then.
Part of making a record:
Playing back the masters and hearing all the work you did. It’s an incredible feeling to hear something that was once an idea become a real thing.
Thing about performing at festivals:
I’m playing my first festival this weekend, Jamaica Plain Music Festival, so I’m about to find out!
Quote:
“Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.”
Thing about the music industry at the moment:
Well, it’s not the money or the ethics. I love making music and sharing it with people, but the steps between making something and sharing it are really depressing.
Thing about this year so far:
FINISHING MY FREAKING ALBUM. I recorded and mixed this entire thing on my own and I feel accomplished.
