Tell us about:
Your latest single you have released:
Rêve-toi is about breaking free of the illusions you have of yourself and of the world. It’s about learning to be OK being in the in-between. It’s about looking up, discovering hope and finding you can dream again. Personally I was affected by undergoing a lot of change and transitions. Where I faced the reality of letting go of certain things, certain narratives. And only in accepting that, learned that I could rebuild myself. I’ve moved homes and really felt I lost my sense of anchor, sense of purpose, and essence of who I am.
Your favourite lyric in this song:
Dream building, all willing, cut the conclusions they’re all illusions. Free falling, still coming, let it surprise me what I can’t see.
Your favourite song to play live:
Thunder is a fun song to jam to on stage, with a really fun vibe and I enjoy just going crazy on. I always enjoy performing this song with a full band because we always end up just having incredible improvisations.
The song that was the longest to write and why?
Thunder – one of the first songs where I felt I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it, and also put my full heart into it. I felt very confident and sure about how I wanted it to sound from the beginning and really put a lot of time into writing the lyrics and riffs to get the right groove.
Your most emotional track:
Tulog Na – I wrote this with a very sentimental approach and to emit a lot of mellow, sentimental, and soothing feelings. It’s written in Tagalog (Filipino) which is my second mother tongue and reminded me about home, and the comfort it brings me.
Dream collaboration:
A collab with Tom Misch! Would love to track my voice or violin on any of his songs. He’s got an amazing and natural groove to his style of playing.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Sometimes a little nervous, but mostly excited! Despite worries about rehearsals and preparing for shows, once I start playing I just let go, and have fun. I get fully present and just cherish connecting with listeners on the stage
The hardest track to play live:
Tulog Na because it can be challenging to replicate the delicateness of the songs from the track to a live performance. The recording has a lot of delicate and almost ‘whisper’ like violin layers, that on stage I play quite differently.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
A bottle of water (no to disposable plastic bottles!). Bright colored eyeshadow and eyeliner to add fun to my concert look. A jacket! Holding rooms can be really cold even in warm weather.
Describe your fans in three words:
Sweet, sensitive, authentic. Whenever I get messages from fans I really feel the sincerity. Sharing about how the music touches them and resonates with where they are.
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
Home Maker Sudan Archives. I love how unconventional this song is but also really well done.. Experimental, edgy, but catchy and with a really cool vibe.
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
I’ll be doing a few shows in Asia! I’ll launch my EP later this year and will celebrate it in Manila. Followed by my first show in Indonesia, at the Bali AXEAN festival – a show bringing together musical acts from around the region.
