Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024

REVIEW – Theatre At The Fringe – ARI: The Spirit of Korea

We sent our reviewer Damian to watch ARI: The Spirit of Korea

As we wait for the show to begin, reading the synopsis projected on the stage, costumed cast wander the aisles enthusiastically welcoming the audience. I feel they are proud to be bringing a piece of Korean culture to life for us.

There are no spoilers as the synopsis explains the somewhat scandalous tale of a loving family torn apart by infidelity, distance, violence, and death.

The story is told through song, dance, percussion, and athletic prowess. They make good use of animated projections to help set the scene and add drama. Almost all of the dialogue and libretto is in Korean, but English surtitles are provided throughout: I never lost track of the story.

The dances are alacritous and well choreographed – it’s a true spectacle. When they are reconstructing the king’s palace, I could feel the pride and excitement of the carpenters – when the women lament being deprived of their husbands, the sorrow is cut with sass!

While the story is uplifted by the family being reunited, I was also moved almost to tears at the end.

A beautiful retelling that will astound.
