Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hi there! I’m Ian Lockwood, and I’m a pop star and comedian based in Brooklyn, New York. I make comedy music that is extremely catchy and listenable, but also threatening and existentially terrifying. I like romantic strolls, the ocean, and of course a bit of meanspirited name-calling. I’m so excited to be at my first Fringe!
Tell us all about your show!
My show is a live pop-comedy concert experience that tells the story of me, Ian, the most famous and successful pop star in the world. Having accomplished everything I’ve ever wanted, I’ve decided that at the end of this show, the final show of my final world tour, I will be ending my life live on stage in an assisted suicide pod. Yes, really – and the pod is on stage with me all show.
(Of course, the show might really be about friendship, loss, and navigating the pain of abandonment when you feel completely alone, blah blah blah – personally, I’m more interested in the singing and dancing.)
How did you come up with the name for the show you’re taking to the fringe?
It’s a fun play on the names of retirement tours from other famous acts, but mine is a bit more literal! I was also inspired by Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour – she and I truly have nowhere to go but down, so it’s time for me to go up (to heaven).
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I am beyond excited for Catherine Cohen’s Come For Me and whatever surprises Zach Zucker has cooked up for Stamptown! But those are both American acts, which is why I’m familiar with them – I’m really excited to explore the festival and see what everyone else is doing.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe?
I have not! I was convinced to go by my amazing friend and collaborator Sophie Zucker, who performed her debut Fringe show Sophie Sucks Face last year. I’ve been soaking up all the info I can and with two months to go I’m exploding with excitement.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
I don’t know yet, but on the advice of some other singers, I won’t be doing any drinking except on days off. So, on my one day off on the 12th, expect to see me running naked through the streets.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
By coming to see The Farewell Tour, of course! Actually, better than that would probably be seeing The Farewell Tour under the influence of psychedelics.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Personally as someone who is on a bit of a budget I’m going to be eating mostly whatever I can find in the ocean! But that’s just me, I’m quirky like that.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
I’m most excited to build a community of new friends (and enemies) over the month! I love meeting new people, especially other talented artists, and I was once called “the villain of the Brooklyn comedy scene.”
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
1. Enormous water bottle
2. Anti-anxiety medication
3. Collapsible suicide pod
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
My secret is I will bark like a sheepdog at potential audience members, herding them from the George Square food stalls into my theater.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?
I am on all platforms as @MrIanLockwood, and you can also find my music and music videos on Spotify and YouTube! Just search “Ian Lockwood”.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
See me die!
