Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hey, my name is Rebecca Wilson and I’m a Multidisciplinary theatre artist who is co-directing this year’s Young Pleasance show. Hey, I’m Emily and I’m the writer and director of this year’s show.
Tell us all about your show!
With her notorious gang-leader brother heading off to WW1, Alice Diamond seizes her chance to take his place and stamp her mark on the streets of London. Together with her all-female crime syndicate, Alice rules the city as Queen of the criminal underworld. But when the war ends – and the men return home – she isn’t ready to give up her newfound status without a fight. Sibling rivalry ensues in this Peaky Blinders-style romp, based on unbelievable real-life events.
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?
We were inspired by Brian McDonald’s book.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Meg Dixon’s show ‘Abrasion’ is great. I saw a working progress showing at Camden’s fringe and I’m so excited she’s taking it to Edinburgh. Always excited to see what else is on at the Pleasance, especially Polly & Esther which is in association with the Sherman Theatre.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe. And if you haven’t, how are you gearing up for it?
Yes, I co-directed and wrote last year’s Young Pleasance show ‘Showgirls & Spies’. The best piece of advice I would give is make sure you have a great team around you and make the most of seeing shows! Get inspired. Nothing you create at fringe is going to be perfect but it’s an opportunity to learn. Creating a show which has to tell a story in an hour is one of the most difficult but useful learning processes you can ask for!
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Wake up in student accommodation (always tired)
Eat a big brunch (beans on toast)
Talk about the shows everyone in my flat watched last night
Make a plan for the shows we want to see later from recommendations
Warm up the cast & give notes (Sometimes run a specialised workshop)
Head to the dome & flyer
Showtime!
Then eat, drink and watch theatre!
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
Seeing as many shows as possible! Trying to see a real mix of genres and shows which surprise you in every way! Good or bad.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Pleasance Courtyard – there are lots of food stalls selling a wide range of different cuisines!
Best thing about performing at the Fringe?
Gives you training in preparation for a long show!
Top tips for travelling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?
Wear comfy shoes at all times.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Honey, trainers and water!
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
Do it in costume/in character! Give a little sneak peak at what an audience can expect when they come and see the show to get their taste buds tingling for more!
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@youngpleasance on instagram
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
