Tell us About:
Your latest single you have released:
We just dropped “One More Shot” featuring our pals from Australia, SoSo. At its core it’s a love letter to those big-riffed pop punk song from the early 2010s. When writing I wanted to keep “One More Shot” fast and loose, with a bunch of comically large hooks slapped in between. Since we’re based in New York City, it’s been fun watching the international response to this song due to the cross-continental collab.
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
The first song we ever dropped was “Listen To Levels” back in November 2022. That track hit the ground running, I think because of how unique it was – I’m pretty sure it’s the only pop punk song written about Avicii and his smash hit “Levels”. That got on the radar of some influencers like Friday Beers and the ball hasn’t stopped rolling since.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
There are different aspects of each song on the upcoming EP that I feel are my favorite. One song might have my favorite chorus, another has my favorite bridge, etc. But overall, I feel “One More Shot” is the most well-rounded of the songs we have on this EP, hence why it was selected as our lead-off single.
Your favourite song to play live:
It’s gotta be “Listen To Levels” – folks really respond to the chorus and bridge. The energy is high, it’s not THAT tough to perform outside some drum fills so you’re able to focus on the crowd more, and it’s a blast to sing along to. If the crowd is having fun, I’m having fun.
The song that was the longest to write and why?
Most Shower Beers songs are written in a pretty short period of time – I know what I want to hear and after a bit of tinkering can get most of a track down. But there is a song called London we’re dropping early 2024 that definitely took the longest time to come around. It started years ago with just a chorus and a verse. Then I shelved the track for about a year until I found a bridge that worked. From there I yet again sat on the track for another year until I started demoing out songs for EP #2. I showed it to my producer who requested a chorus rewrite, which I ended up completing maybe a few weeks before hitting the studio to record. So overall London has been the labor of 3-4 years which is kind of funny to think about.
Your most emotional track:
Almost every song Shower Beers drops is a fun, upbeat, party pop punk song, so I wouldn’t describe any as being too “emotional”. But London (mentioned previously) is easily our most serious and emotional song we’ve ever done. It’s a story about coming to terms with someone who meant a lot to you, but your paths were only meant to cross briefly – in this case, someone moves to a different country. So you watch from the outside as you both move on in life without each other, which I think is a bittersweet experience.
The best lyric you have ever written:
There are a few that stick out to me. In “One More Shot,” I really love the rhyming devices and complicated schemes I could fit in the 2nd verse. For example, I’m confident this is the only pop punk song that references 1980s Atlanta Hawk Dominique Wilkins in the lyrics. I also really enjoy the ending line in the 2nd prechorus in “Listen To Levels”: “I hate her when I’m sober, my liver can’t take much more.” It’s a fun line that rhythmically is super pleasing. But eventually we’ll be dropping a song called Afterglow that has (in my opinion) the most technically-sound verse Shower Beers has ever written, which I’m very excited about.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Definitely nervous. I want to sound good and I want the crowd to have fun. They came out to be entertained and that’s on me to follow through on, you know? Obviously playing live is great, but it’s a job that’s a bit more vulnerable than other jobs, so there’s always a sense of nervousness. I have to think I’ll get over that eventually, but for now it definitely pushes me to produce which in the end is a net positive (I think).
The hardest track to play live:
As of now it’s probably “One More Shot” due to how often we jump between full time, half time, and double time. But Afterglow is going to take that title once it’s released. I can’t spoil too much now, but that song does some zany stuff throughout its duration. Pretty much every genre cliché and songwriting device available to us was packed into that track – it’s gonna be interesting.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Throat Coat tea, vitamins, throat spray, honey, salt rinses, nasal sprays, pretty much everything you’ll need to ensure we can perform our best and not get too run-down. My biggest fear is losing my voice prior to a show or studio session so I take that prep very seriously. For a band called Shower Beers, I’m way stricter with my alcohol consumption around performance time than folks might assume. At some point I am probably going to take it too far and get a steam inhaler or something.
Describe your fans in three words:
Pop punk degens
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
Hot In Herre by Nelly. I think it’s the greatest pop song of all time. The sexy jazz chord progression, the abundance of hooks throughout the entire song, the call and response in the chorus, the irrefutable thesis statement (it IS getting hot in here so we SHOULD take off all our clothes), even the way he purposely misspells “Here,” it’s a masterclass in pop songwriting.
What we can look forward to from your band in 2024:
We have a whole EP that we’re excited to continue dropping full of some awesome features. We’ve also just started writing Shower Beers’ 3rd EP which is already shaping up to be a lot of fun. Pretty much the content train has already left the station and it’s probably not coming back for a long time. So long as folks keep listening, we’re gonna keep releasing music.
