Improv

Ones To Watch 2024 – INTERVIEW – Blanche Improv

It is the new year which only means one thing, it is time to celebrate acts that you should be keeping an eye on this year! Today we speak to Lelda of the new improvisation team Blanche Improv who are looking to perform a lot this year!

Hello tell us all about your improv troupe?

I run Blanche Improv- an improv company that has a bunch of teams, monthly nights and free drop-ins. I do all the admin (cause I am sick and I love it!), most of the coaching and some performing.

How did your troupe come about?

I started working with a friend who saw that people didn’t have anywhere to perform once they finished training and it’s super tricky to keep an indie team running because it takes so much organisation. In June 2023, I went off on my own and started Blanche Improv.

How was 2023 for you?

BUMPY!!! Extremely high highs and not depths of the earth lows, but let’s call them ‘challenging moments’. Running a business is incredible but it can be daunting. I spent a lot of time in front of my computer in my PJ’s in desperate need of a shower and a bowl of veggies.

How did you get into improv?

I had a boyfriend who was doing improv classes and he said to me “Leldz, you’re just not funny. I don’t think improv is for you.”. Naturally, as soon as our dvd’s were divided after our break up, I enrolled in an improv class. He doesn’t do improv any more.

What was the top 3 highlights for you?

The Edinburgh Improv Festival was a huge turning point for me- I met people who have changed my life (for the better), saw wonderful shows and participated inspiring workshops. The whole experience reminded me of the magic of improv.

I had an incredible trip to New York.

My first Blanche Improv Extravaganza at The Cavendish Arms was so moving- people actually came to a show that I produced!!! And they liked it!!!!

What was the key lesson you learnt from last year?

It all works out in the end. Or it doesn’t and something else happens. It’s super scary to give in to that idea but if you want to create something beautiful, you’ve just got to be really flexible, focus on solutions and  make the most of every situation.

What are your plans improv wise for 2024?

I plan to keep growing Blanche Improv to give more people a greater variety of opportunities. There are some teams I want to start- a musical improv team is top of the list.

What other improv acts are you looking forward to seeing perform online or in person to this year?

There are so many teams who’ve been on my radar but I somehow keep missing- Hell Yeah!, Acaprov and Michelle!!. And international teams I’d love to see again- Action Jackson from Berlin, and Land of Giants from Amsterdam.

What styles do you hope to see more of in improv this year?

Style isn’t something that I really track for- I come from a theatre back ground, so I’ve seen and done all kinds of weird stuff!!! As long as it’s good, I’m happy!! In terms of the improv scene in London specifically, I’d love to see a bigger focus on connection between players and simplicity rather than high concept shows.

What improv troupe is your ones to watch in 2024 and why?

Rumourville- I love their show!! It’s such a fun premise and they are all such lovely, skilled players.

Do you have any new years resolutions? If so what are they?

Oh god no. I’m too old for that.

Are you on social media? If so how can people find out more about your troupe?

Yes!! Everything is @blancheimprov
