There is one part of improv that is so fantastic – it is an element at that you do not realise it is happening at first but when you catch on there is a sense of happiness and something that you always look forward to the next time that you do improv. Not sure what I am talking about? Ok let me explain…

When you first start to learn improv, you get introduced to a number of short form games – these are in place to help you learn the key skills and also more importantly, to show you the fun that you can have with the comedy form. When you start to play them you find that you focus a lot on the aims of the game and getting the ideology correct. However when you start to ease and feel comfortable with these something fun can happen.

One of the most exciting parts of improv, is when you start to understand and realise what improv games you are a fan of – these are usually games that you are really excited to play and always can;t wait for them to appear in a lesson or a rehearsal. When you start to like a game it eventually becomes a thing that you want to always develop and challenge yourself to go more creative the next time you play it.

When I first started training in improv, I learnt very early on that the Alphabet Game, Story Game and Questions Only were two of the games I really enjoyed. I loved the challenges all these games created and the way that it made you have to think on the spot incredibly fast. I really enjoyed being thrown into the deep end and having to continue each of these games to try and succeed also they can get pretty competitive which is fun.

That is the pure joy of improv, discovering what you love to do and when you have those lightbulb moments, they are very enjoyable.
