I have always been a huge fan of podcasts, I have listened to podcasts as far back at 2008 I think it was although I never really listened to them until a few years later. My first real introduction to the world of podcasts was when I was in my last year of university and had to spend hours in the classroom with two of my friends working on our coursework into the very early hours of the morning. It would just be the three of us, myself, Matt and Tom and whilst we were working, the podcasts of The Ricky Gervais show was blasting out into the room. It was in the moment I realised that podcasts can create so much comedy and can really sort of act like a ‘best friend.’ It also sort of created a special bonding moment between the three of us and I am still very much close friends with them today.
Over the years, I have learnt that podcasts can really be so much more then the ‘laugh’ and whilst I do listen to a lot of podcasts to help get me through the tough days, the good days and the times I have to work through the night, I also have found that it can be so much more.
Over the years, the idea of what a podcast is has obviously developed, especially with the pandemic and so many more have arisen and so much more content is now available and in a saturated market it can be hard to find really good shows. I have learnt that sometimes episodes of certain podcasts can really have an effect and over time I have shown my appreciation for these episodes on my social media channels.
I have previously spoken about the podcast episode that inspired me to start writing this feature, and you can read more about it here. This week we are talking about a podcast that is full of comedy magic.
Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life –
Episode: Ep. 4 Chamber Of Secrets Ch. 7-10
Podcast: Potterless
I know there is a lot of controversy around the Harry Potter world recently but it did not mean that I wanted to shy away about writing about this podcast because I feel it needs a mention because it is a show that gave me a completely different perspective of the books and made me laugh a lot along the way. We are solely focussing on the stories and the words used in the book in this article as it is very relevant to the podcast and one of the reasons that I used to spend hours listening to it on my commute to work, trying not to laugh out loud on a busy tube.
There are so many discussions that make me look at the book in a completely different way
I read Harry Potter from a young age, I couldn’t get into the books originally (maybe because I tried reading them from the second one) so it took a while and I didn’t start to try and read them again until there was a fourth book out. When I tried reading them the second time I got into them and enjoyed them like everyone else. When the last book came out both mum and I got a copy each and spent the whole day sitting there reading every last page.
Over the years I have re-read the books and got lost in the many different computer game versions of the Harry Potter World (the Lego games are superior and hilarious). So when I came across this podcast called Potterless, I thought it was such an interesting concept I had to listen to it.
The podcast is focussed around an American called Mike Schubert who has never read the Harry Potter Books and decides to do it as an adult. Each episode looks at a few chapters and it goes through ever book in incredible detail featuring Harry Potter fans along the way to help discuss it.
Right from the start I really enjoyed this podcast as it is very interesting and hilarious at the same time. There are so many discussions that make me look at the book in a completely different way and I love the in depth detail that they actually go into with the book.
There is no particular episode I would say is the best but I would say that every single episode about all the books is worth listening to as they are very funny and incredibly great. The reason I chose to speak about an episode set in the middle of the Chamber of Secrets is because I think this book has a lot of funny things in reaction to this story. There are some fun parts in this podcast and it is in the centre of the book.
The thing that makes this podcast unique is that Michael does not read ahead he only reads the chapters that he is talking about so has no clue about what is coming next and that is what makes it so great because when things are revealed throughout they are incredibly natural reactions and makes you remember how you first reacted when you initially read the books.
I highly recommend this podcast, i haven’t listened to it in SUCH a long time but re-listening it reminded me just great they are and is such a great show.
