INTERVIEW – A Quick Conversation With: Attrition

Welcome the feature where we ask musicians or bands five really tough questions about music! Today we speak to the band Attrition. They have spent the summer touring and in September they are heading to Bristol (15/9/23), Coventry (29/9/23), London (30/9/23) in the United Kingdom before heading across to Europe. We ask them all the tough questions !

What is the hardest lyric you have ever had to write and why?

Well one of them is definitely “A Girl called Harmony”… my divorce song from 1991, originally on the  Tricky Business album .It actually became our most well known song… (and our most “gothic”)… I have since met 2  American “girls” called harmony… named after the song by their parents… best review I ever had!

What is the weirdest gift or compliment a fan has given you?

After naming a child after my song I cant think of anything more…

Who is the best band or musician you have had the pleasure to share the stage with?

We have played with so many over the past 43 years so its hard to say…. I have lots of favourite  bands of course but I’ve never worried about sharing a stage with them… in fact I can enjoy bands  more if I’m not distracted by my own performance later!

What one of your songs has been the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?

Again… definitely “A Girl Called Harmony”…its pretty laid back and with tricky timing…it needs a great  sounding PA as well… I prefer the livelier songs for our shows …with the odd exception, when we  perform our horror film scores live… we did that in the mountains of Transylvania in 2018 and that  was amazing… so yeah… I tend to not play “Harmony” live as often these days!

Dream Collaboration and why ?

I had a “I’m not worthy” moment in 2015, when Wolfgang Flur , ex-Kraftwerk, said how much he liked  our album of WW1 poetry (“Millions of the Mouthless Dead”) and recorded a guest vocal part for the  album! But generally I don’t look to collaborate most of the time… I do have many guests on the  albums though so I can bring in classical instruments etc…it’s a good way to work and expands my  musical palette a lot!
