Tell Us About:
Your latest single you have released:
Worst Case Ontario is based off of the cult classic, “Jennifer’s Body.” It is about a temptress luring you in just to have your heart ripped out. It can really be for anyone who has had their hearts metaphorically ripped out. We wanted it to feel universal.
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
Our very first single as Sucker Punch (we were under a different name before we rebranded) was “Hope Like Hell.” We were stoked to finally have it released to the world, but anxious about how it would be received.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
“I’m Ready to Ride Giants, Kunu” is a band favorite. There are a lot of dynamics and mood changes throughout. The song starts quiet and then just explodes in energy, dipping again during the bridge and coming together in a big crescendo towards the end.
Your favourite song to play live:
“Incognito Mode” is full of energy and crowd participation from start to finish. The breakdown during the bridge is the best part of the set for sure.
The song that was the longest to write and why?
“Worst Case Ontario” took us a long time to really solidify in regards to not only the theme and lyrics, but the structure of the song proved to be a challenge. We were editing that song for months until we felt we had it right.
Your most emotional track:
“I’m Ready to Ride Giants, Kunu.” The song is about silencing that anxious voice in the back of your head that is projecting self-doubt.
The best lyric you have ever written:
The chorus in “Hope Like Hell” has a lot of power behind it. Hearing it back from the crowd during a show is very cathartic and relatable. It reminds us that at we all go through low points during our lives and that it is okay to feel a certain way about it: “I just don’t feel a thing and I want you to know / the sun is setting on hope / I’m tired, I’m letting go.”
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
A very healthy combination of anxiety and excitement.
The hardest track to play live:
“I’m Ready to Ride Giants, Kunu” would be up there. There are lots of changes between clean and distorted parts in addition to layers of vocals occurring simultaneously.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
We haven’t been on many tours with the expectation of weekend runs. If we have the opportunity to really get on the road for a notable amount of time, we would absolutely bring reliable duffel bags, extra toiletries, laundry bags, portable phone chargers, neck pillows, a reusable water bottle, lots of snacks, trash bags, and if we are lucky, a MiFi to get work done on the road.
Describe your fans in three words:
Fun, welcoming, and loyal
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
“Anthem, Pt. 2” is perfect throughout. That song has so many peaks and valleys crammed in under four minutes. The energy and emotion Blink manages to capture is incredible.
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
Our new EP, a really special record release show in Asbury Park, NJ, and visiting new cities in the northeast and the south!
