REVIEW: Theatre At The Fringe – Potty The Plant

Potty The Plant, a show with a vibrant poster, it’s own merchandise and a puppet as the lead of the show. When you head into the venue you are welcomed with a set that you initially think is quite simple but it comes to life in more ways then one throughout the show and sometimes in ways you never expected.

It is a show with some great talent leading it with bold songs that are really catchy, some fun dance routines and even a touch of audience interaction. Throughout there are many laughs from the audience due to the physicality of the actors and the way that they brought their characters to life.

The star of the show is the actors as they are incredibly talented and have fantastic voices. One of the highlights is the actor who voices Potty, at some point you actually get to see him and they deal with the way that he has to position himself to voice him under a desk very well and it is a hilarious part of the show. There are some fun sections of the show and the Sun and the Moon end up creating a great little sequence you were not expecting.

Whilst there are some really strong positives about this show, I have to also pick out a few things that effected my watching experience of it. The first one that really stood out to me was that there was a problem with the sound and when it initially started it was very hard to actually hear what was happening and at times it played very loudly that you could not always hear the talent singing. It was one of the first shows at the Fringe so I am sure that this is something that will be altered at some point, so do not allow it to put you off going to see this show.

I found that sometimes the actual narrative of the musical let the actors down – there are some points where it sort jumps very far ahead that it feels like there are huge gaps missing. There are also parts of the show that slightly contradict one another which makes you wonder why they set up that concept in the first place if they are going to go against it.

The show also relies heavily on jokes about Ginger haired people, which I personally found incredibly outdated in 2023 and not relevant. I also think that a couple of more actors are needed because there are some minor roles that really needed others to play them for it to flow a bit better as it gets really confusing because they wear their medical outfits the whole time and do not complete a full costume change.

Overall, this show was entertaining, if you want something different to do around the 6pm mark then this is the show for you. Whilst you may not enjoy all the jokes, you will definitely enjoy watching the cast as they are a bowl full of energy on stage that bring the light to it. Especially the plant.
