Hello! Tell us about your show ?
Hello there, we’re MIM [Make It Mine] Theatre, coming to Camden Fringe with a show called ‘Glad To Be Dead?’
‘Glad To Be Dead?’ is a series of monologues from beyond the grave. It’s an hour show consisting of three actors multi-rolling fictional and non-fictional subjects throughout history. Some of them you’ll know and some of them you’ll learn about. From their rooms, our subjects have a window to the outside world, a window that allows them to see important events connected to their lives and also their memories. Allowing them to digest, contemplate and reflect on their experiences and the impact they have had on the world.
How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the Camden fringe?
The name came last. We were writing the script and became more aware that death may mean different things to different people and that some are more afraid of living than they are at dying. When it came to bringing our subjects back to life we thought for some of them, one of them in particular, that they may have preferred to be dead so we posed the question and it stuck.
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
Our style is quite gothic due to the nature of our show being about death. This is not a ‘jump scare’ piece, but as you get absorbed in the story, we’re sure, you’ll experience a few shivery moments. Are show is monologue based with an overarching theme to connect them all together.
What will your set be about?
People and their stories. Our show deals with real life events as that of fiction and we’ve taken a lot of time and effort to ensure peoples stories are told with sensitivity. Of course we’ve taken some artistic licensing here and there, especially when looking at our fictional characters.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Chopin’s Last Tour
Macready! Dickens’ Theatrical Friend
Fagin’s Last Hour
Have you done the fringe before? What have been some of your favourite shows to date and why?
Barbara, one of our cast members, is a regular punter at Edinburgh Fringe but this is her first time performing in a festival. It’s actually the first time for all the cast and production team to be involved with fringe. With Brighton Fringe under our belts, we’ve 4 more fringe festivals to haunt before we lay our show to rest.
What advice would you give to others who want to perform at Camden Fringe next year?
Don’t underestimate how important content is. You can’t show the world your poster every day, you need variety and lots of it, and a canva account!
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden Fringe?
MIM Theatre are newbies to the Camden Fringe but we’re looking forward to being in the atmosphere of theatregoers and performers alike!
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
Don’t live in London. MIM Theatre are Essex based so I guess that’s our hack!
What are your three favourite things about Camden?
‘help Punks get Drunk’ signs
Dublin Castle
The fact I could just get a tattoo basically anywhere if I fancied it.
Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?
“S****. I thought.” – It’s a cast favourite from our show as it’s said by a murderer after they describe the killing.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
David Tennant. The cast fan-girl over him on the regular actually… We’re a standard bunch of thespians!
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Bernard. I don’t know why. I think it’s because of the top hat, the Pigeon deserves a fancy name.
