Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hello! My name’s Tamsyn. I’m an actor, stand up and writer. Originally from Cornwall but I live in London now because I hate being happy.
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?
I was dragging myself around TK Maxx and was like ‘this shop’s a mess but not as much of a mess as my life’.
Tell us all about your show!
I’m so excited about my show. Broadly it’s about my relationships with various men throughout my life and how those have affected my relationship with myself. The show’s largely centred around some footage I accidentally stumbled upon of my estranged father. It feels like I’m finally brave enough, and grown up enough, to say all the things I’ve always wanted to say about that area of my life, no matter how brutal or honest. Making the show is like I’m preparing to launch myself from some sort of precipice.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’m looking forward to seeing all my comedian friends, but more so in our capacity as friends- that’s hugely important at the fringe. I’ll be keeping Alison Spittle and Celya AB very close by.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
Yes I have. My advice would be don’t do it unless, like me, you’re a masochist who loves an empty bank accountant. This doesn’t apply to those from money though, you guys go for it, get stuck in.
Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?
‘I once went out with a guy because he had a printer.’ It’s true and really sums up my pathetic approach to relationships. If a guy has the same phone charger as me I will also take that into consideration.
What have been some of the most unique and different comedy shows you have seen this year and why?
Not a comedy show but Viggo Venn winning BGT are you kidding me? That’s huge and made me giddy as hell. I saw my fave Kim Noble’s new show Lullaby for Scavengers. Good and weird as usual, thumbs up. He’s been developing it for seven years which I find so funny. There’s so much pressure to do a new show every year. Why not take seven and I dunno, enjoy your life a bit?
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
What I plan to do: Gym, write, see some pals, cook/eat.
What I will do: roll out of bed hungover two hours before my show. Shower if poss.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
As a punter? See everything in a mix of venues. Enjoy, it’s truly incredible. As an act? Go as a punter.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Nice food in Edinburgh if you’re not too broke.
The most challenging thing about performing at the fringe?
Spending your life’s savings performing to four people.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Phone, keys, laptop. That’s all you ever need anywhere.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
Pay an expert to do it.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
All the men I’ve ever slept with. Would just be insightful for me to see them as a collective. They’ll all think the show is about them too which is cute.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?
Tamsynkelly on everything.
And finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Honestly one of the biggest compliments I’ve ever had is when another comedian on a very long road trip told me he knew I ‘would be a good hang’… Come and see it now because I’ve heard it’s getting transferred to the O2.
