Hello! Tell us about yourself?

I’m Alexander Bennett, I’m a comedian who enjoys living the double life of doing introspective, self-reflective stand up comedy as well as loads of odd weird shit. I’ve been part of Consignia, the award-nominated anti-comedy anti-entertainment performance-art thing, I’ve got a podcast (Born Yesterday) in which I annoy comedians by getting them to explain things to me like I’m stupid, I’ve rung a bell for Mark Watson for 24 Hours and I orchestrated a crowd at the Pleasance Grand and 30+ comedians including Nick Helm, Ed Gamble, Sophie Duker and Phil Wang into watching one man each his lunch (Dan Vs Food).

How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?

I like titles that sound silly when people say them, so I started from the themes of the show and worked it out from there.

Tell us all about your show!

My show is about self-loathing! It’s about not liking yourself, how you can turn anything into self hatred and how you shouldn’t do that, probably.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

A quick look at the brochure reveals Andrew O’Neill, Alison Spittle, Celya AB, Crizards and Garrett Millerick as acts I’m excited to see.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

I’ve done the Fringe a lot. Don’t forget to eat and when you do eat, eat something good for you is honestly the best advice I can give here. Also, you best make sure you like your show before you do your run. If you don’t like it, change it.

Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?

I was flirting with a rich widow and I said “If you can’t get a taxi, you can leave in a huff. If that’s too soon, you can leave in a minute and a huff.” Went right over her head.

What have been some of the most unique and different comedy shows you have seen this year and why?

I saw Marc Maron at the Bloomsbury Theatre and the care and thought he had put into expressing himself to that audience left me feeling invigorated about the medium.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

Wake up, walk home.

Eat something dreadful, despite Edinburgh’s fantastic range of food options.

Work on my show.

See someone else’s show.

Review that show for another comic without cynicism or bitterness.

Flyerer pep talk (which is more for me than them)

Do my show.

Weep.

Head home early. About 2.

What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?

As a punter? Mix up what you see. See an act you love. Take a punt on something you’ve not heard of. Listen out for shows getting buzz, be ahead of the curve, see one of those. See something insane. See the city itself.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

At the risk of sincerity, the platform to express yourself when you’re operating at your peak, and engaging with the audiences who connect to you.

The most challenging thing about performing at the fringe?

It’s too expensive.

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

Good shoes, a thin raincoat and prophylactics.

What’s the secret to successful flyering?

Engaging people in conversation. This is why I employ other people to do it for me.

Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?

Baroness Bloomfield of Hinton Waldrist.

If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?

@AlexyBennett on Twitter, @alexanderybennett on Insta/TikTok/YouTube and @alexanderbennettcomedian on Facebook

And, finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

I’m funny, honestly.
